About كرايستشرش

كرايستشيرش هي أكبر مدن الجزيرة الجنوبية وثاني أكبر مدينة من حيث عدد سكان المنطقة الحضرية في نيوزيلندا. يبلغ عدد سكانها الحضري نحو 407,800 نسمة، بينما يصل عدد سكانها ضمن النطاق الحضري الموسّع إلى 556,500 نسمة. تقع في إقليم كانتربري، قرب وسط الساحل الشرقي للجزيرة الجنوبية، شرق سهول كانتربري، وبالقرب من الطرف الجنوبي لخليج بيغاسوس. يحدّها من الشرق المحيط الهادئ، ومن الجنوب شبه جزيرة بانكس ذات الأصل البركاني القديم. يمرّ نهر آفون / أوتاكارو عبر وسط المدينة، وتحيط به مساحة واسعة من الحدائق الحضرية. وتتميّز المدينة بسطحها المستوي نسبيًا، باستثناء تلال الميناء، إذ يبلغ ارتفاعها الوسطي نحو 20 مترًا فوق مستوى سطح البحر. تُعرف كرايستشيرش بسمعتها كمدينة «إنجليزية» من حيث طابعها المعماري ولقبها «مدينة الحدائق»، نظرًا إلى تشابهها مع مدن الحدائق في إنجلترا، مع احتفاظها في الوقت نفسه بإرث تاريخي ماوري. وتتمتع بمناخ محيطي معتدل مع هطول منتظم للأمطار المتوسطة.
